I must admit, I've never heard this in basketball, and conciously don't know what I do. Calling a foul, talking to partners, giving signals, I just let it drop.
Comments? Is this germane only to volleyball?

In basketball, the purpose of a smitty (lanyard) is either:
- to allow you to just let it drop, or
- serve as a backup in case you suck at taking it out of your mouth
If (b), then very quickly it would turn into (a). Which makes the advice you received worthless. So it must apply only to volleyball.
