That was always my problem the few times I used an 'innings' indicator..

I HATE the people I work with - some of whom are pretty good umpires - who pull that little piece of paper after every half inning and write the score down.....just a pet peeve. It looks amateurish to me frankly. Me - I will stroll over to a scorekeeper later in the game and casually go "Top/bottom 5, right? Score?" - and leave it at that.

And yes, I know someone has said they don't care wha the score is - well, I DO - despite everything we do not do these games in a total vacuum....
