You had it right and talked yourself right out of it.
ASA's, (removed reference to other org. rules) is two from the time of the throw. NOTHING else matters, it is ADVANCE two bases from the runner's position (bases have nothing to do with the award) at the time the ball was release by the defender which caused the ball to go out of play.
And before the baseball guys muddle this up, the only difference in MLB is wording that excludes the consideration of a BR reaching 1B before a throw is made.
