More Strangeness...

Had one come up Tuesday night that i've never had before.

I'm working solo. A runner steals second on a wild pitch. She gets there with no throw. Ball is returned to the pitcher.

The defensive coaches begin screaming at the pitcher, "Throw it to first base! Throw it to first base!". Pitcher stands there like a deer in the headlights. Runner standing on second starts heading back to first. Bingo! I called the out for a Look Back violation.

Defensive coach approaches me after the inning ends to ask me about the play. It seems that they wanted the ball thrown to first to appeal the runner leaving early. Tried to explain as best I could in ten seconds how an appeal works and why this was not an appeal play.

I have NEVER had a team attempt "an appeal play" for a runner leaving early on a non-batted ball. That's just...weird.

Tonight...another league, another game. Runner on third. Wild pitch. Runner scores easily. Defensive team throws the ball over to third, touches the base and "appeals" that the runner left early!

Must be something in the water around here...
