I would concur that it seems to be the shoes. I never experienced shin problems before wearing the black NIKE Airliners. This year I'm gonna do all I can to avoid this painful problem: 1. Excercise, 2) Different shoes, 3) insoles, 4) maybe even support socks.
What's next, a cane?
