I saw bats the other day (may have been Brett Brothers) which were bamboo. Light and strong. Also very interesting.

My son started using bamboo bats five years ago in scout ball. They weigh the same, but they're harder and significantly stronger and more durable than any wood bat. It's the only type of wood bat that he never broke. He used one for two years of batting practice and retired it unbroken.
And talk about a plentiful resource.
