It wasn't that they didn't like seeing players receive technical fouls, many fans actually enjoy an opposing player getting whacked. It gives them the opportunity to give that player grief.

The issue was that fans were complaining that they paid to see so and so and that individual got 2 Ts and tossed in the 2nd quarter and the fan feels that he didn't get his money's worth from the show.

In a nutshell, that's why it's the NBE.
