Yes, unless otherwise determined, you should decide in your pre-game who will be the referee. The referee tosses the ball to start the game. And in short, yes, the senior guys are giving you all that responsibility. Take it. They will help you determine the correct call should the need arise. Remember this when you get to be the cagey old vet breaking in a new guy.
If there is a question on whether a basket counts or not, the referee had the final say.
