They may have been correct
twenty years ago. Back in the olden days, there was a twenty-eight foot "hash mark" painted on the court. If during a five second dribbling count, the dribbler advanced the ball past this mark, he got a new five second count. In this situation, he could dribble, closely guarded, for almost ten seconds with having a violation called.
Some older courts still have these fossil "hash marks". Look for them. Collect them. Fossil hunting is an interesting hobby. And I was not talking about Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. when I was talking about fossils. I was thinking about him, but I wasn't talking about him.
