Oddly enough my very first public game (about 10 years ago) was because another ref failed to show. I went to the game just to watch (personally knowing the one ref who managed to get there) and was called me down from the stands when it became apparent there was a need. Because I lived close to the school gym I ran home and got on my duds and made it back just into the 2nd period.
I've heard of some guys who actually keep an extra set of duds in their car for those "just in case" scenarios.
