Coach, the rules don't specifically state this shot shouldn't count. That said, the inference is there.

Here's why.
1. The ball normally becomes dead on a foul, unless the shooting motion has begun.
2. That exception (shooting motion) does not apply to an offensive violation.
3. The ball would have been dead when the shooter traveled.
4. A dead ball going through the basket is irrelevant, thus no basket.

That said, I wouldn't get too worked up over this. I don't think it's that uncommon of a mistake, as the rules take a bit of navigation to figure this one out.
