First Real Game of the Year

Assignor calls this morning. Someone backed out of an assignment and he needs help. Three Private School Games B8, G9, B9. Pay = V level. Arbiter shows my games nine miles from house. Ten minutes later – Assignor calls back. G9/B9 games are off, it’s just one game…..but, he will pay 1.5 times V pay for this game. Me –

I arrive early. No partner and no V team. Cell - phone rings….partner can’t find Rec Center. Great (sarc). Partner and V Team arrive about same time. Put 10 minutes on clock. Ok, let’s all get those wrong colored undershirts off. Let’s tuck in Jerseys. Short pre-game – Partner's first game of the season. Table is experienced. Captain’s Meeting. Coaches Meeting. Game on.

Court is multipurpose – white, blue and red lines….. First time down the floor… Woe, let’s move those cheerleaders from behind the basket to the side corner of the court. Five minutes gone in 1st quarter white is pitching a shutout….Sniff, sniff? Someone has passed gas at one end!

End of first quarter 16-0. Blue finally scores to make it 21-2 (white is disappointed - guess the line in Vegas was more?). 41W – "son, pull up your pants".

Mid way thru 2nd period. TWEET. Me - backcourt. Blue coach – “ref aren’t we playing the white lines?” Me, duh. Went with IW, ball in.

Partner did well, after I reminded him of the 5 second count…….oh yeah! Few fouls. Lots of traveling and jump balls. Game ends in an hr. 34-16. Easy $.

I have a GV game tomorrow night….HOORAH! Let the season commence!!
