This little "request" vs "call" debate has started to drive me nuts. The official doesn't "call" timeout, either, does he? He GRANTS it.
What is the definition of the word "call", anyway? From m-w.com, the first two definitions:
1 a : to speak in a loud distinct voice so as to be heard at a distance : SHOUT
b : to make a request or demand
I think the coach or player "calls" timeout and the official "grants" it.
