Be really slow on the whistle..let the ball bounce on the floor a time or two...maybe 4-5 seconds.

You could maybe use the following to call a T (after implicitly declaring that the try was actually successful and already dead):
ART. 7 . . . Delay the game by acts such as: a. Preventing the ball from being made live promptly or from being put in play.

This is basically what they did....not so direct...but you could make it stick.
