But ASA isn't a nanny state. It's a ruling body of a particular sport that has the right to decide what safety precautions are required in order to participate. Batters weren't always required to wear batting helmets, but now, they are. Catchers wear chest protectors, helmets/masks and knee/leg padding. Other sports require face masks for their youth (and even adult) players as well (ie., lacrosse and hockey). Nothing wrong with that.

I personally have no dog in this fight, but I wouldn't think ASA would be overstepping their bounds if they required youth infielders to wear similar head protection. After all, don't the runners have to wear helmets? Ask yourself why that is, and you'll see it's not that illogical a leap to require youth infielders to wear similar protection.

I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views!

Screw green, it ain't easy being blue!

I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again.
