That's called "guessing". And an "educated" guess is still wrong.
Eh, it's part of the territory in 2-man officiating. We do have to make educated guesses from time to time with only 4 eyes and 10 players, especially on a break.

Dribbler is being chased pretty close from behind and all of a sudden goes down hard. I didn't *see* the defender trip him or step on him, but I *know* he did as does everybody else in the joint. I call the foul. I always call that foul.

Then there's the defender who goes after a jump shot and there a loud smack from him hitting the shooter's arm that everyone in the place can hear. I didn't see a thing cause my eyes don't work that fast. It's still a foul and nobody argues it.

I don't mean I run around guessing on every call - I work to get the best position possible. But it happens and I'm not going to pass on something I *know* is there just cause I don't *see* it.
