That's true, but that wasn't my point, Tony. My point was that when officials are asked to rate other officials, we tend to give ourselves and our friends 9's and 10's and give everybody else 4's and 5's (especially newer guys who might get some of our games). People want to keep their own rating high, so they try to lower everybody else's rating. That's just how it works.

So having no ratings at all is bad; but very often having ratings is worse. I went from the #1 rated non-varsity official on my college board to the bottom rated varsity official in one year. I had great ratings so I got bumped up to varsity. But once there, other officials didn't think quite so highly of me. Part of that may have been my performance as a rookie, I readily admit. But I don't think all of the change can be attributed to that. Just my own experience and opinion.
