The coach is incorrect. There is an exception that allows the holder to have his knee on the ground. The rules do not state anything about being between the goal lines for the exception to be in effect. A team could "attempt a field goal attempt" from their own endzone with the same results as a punt. It would be odd if they tried this, but nothing prevents it.
