Think about this play.

A1 throws a long pass to A2 streaking down the court, and the ball bounces high from about the three point line. Just after it bounces, the official calls a foul on B3 who is attempting to guard A2. After the whistle, the ball, which was in the air following the bounce, goes through the basket.

These plays may seem completely different, but as far as the rules are concerned, they are identical.
Rule 4-41 Shooting, Try, Tap

A try for field goal is an attempt by a player to score two or three points by throwing the ball into a team's own basket.

It is not a try for goal if you shot the ball in the wrong basket so if you have a foul before the ball enters the basket the ball is dead.
