As I understand it, they don't aid in starting the clock...they do start the clock (at least in NCAA). Lead is responsible only for the 5 second count to make sure the ball is inbounded. Trail is the sole person responsible for chopping in time. Could be worth a quick pre-game conversation with the timer to maek sure they know this...
