9.1B. Play: A1, at the free-throw line to attempt a free throw, is handed the ball by the official who then starts the 10-second count. A1 accidentally strikes his/her knee or leg with the ball while bouncing it. The ball rolls toward the basket between the free-throw lane lines. Ruling: The official shall sound the whistle at once causing the ball to become dead immediately. This will prevent a violation, such as another player stepping across a line to recover the ball. The official should caution the free thrower, then again place the ball at the disposal of A1 and start a new count.
