Well, we don't protect because he "might have been safe."

We decide what would have likely happened and enforce that. If the pitch was back to the screen, safe. If the pitch was blocked by the cather and picked up right away, out. In between -- it's why we get the big bucks.

And, as Gee points out, proper mechanics would have prevented the problem in the first place.
