Perhaps the ultimate gray area. "The motion which habitually precedes the release of the ball" is obviously not the same for every player. Use your best judgment. IMO, this is a case where it is important to be quick and decisive with the call.

The good thing about a gray area is that it is difficult for anyone to say that you are wrong.
