Before ASA changed the rule a couple of years ago, the orange base was dirt in foul territory except when a batter-runner was first reaching 1B, and it only mattered then when there was a play on the BR.

At all other times, it was dirt.

ASA changed the rule so that at all other times it is one large base than can be used by either the offense or defense.

Canada may still have the rule in its original form.
