All kidding aside (well, mostly anyway), it certainly makes sense. However the story indicates that while they're matching the key configuration starting in 2 years, the three point line will have an "intermediate" change for about another 10 years before they match. If they're going to change it in 2 years part-way, why don't they just make the final change then? I guess it's to get players acclimated in increments.
Wouldn't it be nice if the entire set of rules matched, not just the floor configuration. Is it a big deal? No. But it might increase the popularity of the international game in this country without a negative effect elsewhere.
