There's almost no interest in the NIT, so I can't imagine that there's any real excitement about a 3rd tournament.

Yes.
It is broadcast on Fox College Sports.
It is a private tournament, not an NCAA event. The NCAA didn't say anything because of their recent Antitrust problems.
