Did a slow-pitch tournament this past weekend and had an epiphany. After all these years, I now realize exactly what my purpose on the field is. It involves two objectives: (1) to take the bat out of batters' hands, and (2) to make the pitcher put the ball on a tee. It is interesting that both objectives can be accomplished simultaneously.
Throughout each game, the players of both teams made it clear to me that that was what I was doing. After the games, they expressed satisfaction with the job I had done.
It's nice to know what you're doing behind the plate.
