Exclamation Girl scores 64 points in HS playoff game!

Metola Allen, a six foot center, scored 64 points for Vida HS vs. Thurston HS to help her team win their "county championship" 72-32. Here's the kicker - it happened in 1928!

Today's Oregonian newspaper had a very comprehensive story on the history of girls basketball, not just in Oregon, but nationally. It also mentioned another Vida HS girl, Gladys Minney, who scored 171 points in four tournament games the following year including 50 in the final. Gladys also had games of 73 and 84 points and reportedly (although no actual record survives) once scored 104 in a game and appeared in Ripley's Believe It Or Not!

Here's a link to the story. It runs about six "pages" on their site and I suggest you read the entire thing. Too bad the website doesn't show the uniforms that were shown in the paper. They were really cute - yeah, right.
