I don't know whether it's a matter of practicing it or not understanding it. A foul is a foul. If there is enough contact made to normally call a foul on the play, then just call it.
I really think that quite a few officials have the wrong impression that you have to have a patient whistle on
all contact. They end up penalizing a shooter by not calling a foul when he has made a good play getting the ball off and making a shot after the defensive contact that forced him to make that good play.
Soooooo, just call the fouls.....and don't regret 'em.
