They're different because they're not specifically mentioned. They aren't worn JUST for adornment. Everyone wears some sort of sock in their shoes. So the only question is what they look like. When that matters, it's addressed in the book. Otherwise (as in the case of socis) leave it alone.

Thank goodness for teen age girls who often seem to enjoy expressing their own individuality in their socks. It's just so cute !
