I don't know about "often." I've heard it used, but not recently. Like many other insensitive jokes from the past, it's fallen out of favor for good reason. "Rape" also used to be used as an analogy for the inevitable.
"Assault" would have been a far more acceptable term here, or even "felony."
BTW, I agree with your assessment of why he probably used it as well as the judgment on the actions of the OP.
