In reality, "captain" at the h.s. level is little more than an honorary title bestowed upon a few players by the team or its coach. Team captains may be leaders on campus, in the locker room, and in drills but in games most will look to the sideline to see what the coach wants for a penalty decision.

After the coin toss, I rarely remember who the captains are. If we call for a captain to go speak to the referee concerning a penalty, we usually have to yell 2 or 3 times to get one's attention. Sometimes we just nudge a guy forward if nobody speaks up. If a player wishes to communicate with me, I'll hear what he has to say if he is respectful, whether he is a captain or not.
