The FED did issue something sometime somewhere about not telling a player to remove jewelry but to just tell them that they couldn't play until they did so. Of course they also included this statement in casebook play 3.5SitB--"The official should inform the team member to remove the jewelry immediately."

The do have the option of refusing. If they do refuse, they just have to leave the court.
