The call could probably be sold 9 times out of 10 on the field. For the 1 time out of 10 that it was protested? Who knows, as you said, there is no certain rule reference to back up the call.
Good point about the extra people on the playing field who are allowed to be verbal to their own team. Maybe that explains the difference in the rule.
