I agree, sometimes they just do dumb things and get themselves called out. At 18U - dumb runner, dumb, dumb runner. At 12U - is the call different?
There does seem to be a boundary somewhere between a little "boy were you stupid to fall for that" trickery and outright "verbal obstruction" (assuming there is such a thing).
In your original scenario, you were there and saw it as "boy were you stupid to fall for that and not look for my signal", and honestly, that is almost certainly what I would have done, too.
Just in general, though, it seem like there should be something in the rules less than USC that can be called for intentional defensive verbal confusion.
