I was taught to use the same call of "ball" in a normal voice no matter how close it was.

The reasoning that was explained to me was that if you changed your tone or inflection on a close one, it could sound like you were guessing and needed to convince everyone.

My "ball" call does not change whether the ball is over the batters head or a millimeter off the outside corner.
