Today marks the 72nd anniversary of the only woman to bat in the major leagues!
The Reds played at home against the Cards on July 31, 1935. It was a night game -- one of the first in the big leagues. Crosley Field was packed, with fans spilling onto the field to try to get a spot to watch the game. While ushers, umpires and police were trying to clear the field of spectators, Kitty Burke made a dash for home plate, grabbed a bat right out of the hands of Babe Herman, and took her cuts in the batter's box. She was quickly escorted off the field, but later performed on the vaudeville circuit as "the girl who batted in the Major Leagues."
(Sox and Yanks were both off last night, so this is all I have to talk about.
