To give you all an idea of how desperate they are for umpires in my area here is how I got into it.
My boss was on the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth board and he learned that I played baseball in college, and he said "We need umps, email this guy". I thought what the hell and I did. The next week I am standing on 13 yo Babe Ruth Field not knowing ****, never read a rule book, etc. I am wearing grey docker from Sears, a navy blue collared shirt from Wal-Mart, a black alpinestar hat, and white shoes. Yep, I was awesome!!!!!!!
The next game I was behind the plate. I had never done a game in my life back there and I had to borrow equipment to wear. It was a sad, sad day. I feel sorry for the teams that got me. After that game I realized I had a lot to learn and long ways to go. Over the past year and half I have picked up on a many things. Read whatever I could get my hands and LISTENED and APPLIED what people who knew more than me had to say. Basically, I was THAT guy in my post that we are talking about.
