The mere holding of the bat, in and of itself, in the strike zone is NOT an attempt to bunt.

There must be some attempt by the batter to make contact with the ball. That attempt might not involve moving the bat toward the ball, but the umpire must judge that the batter was attempting to make contact to declare a strike on a pitch delivered out of the strike zone.
