One of my last experiences with slow pitch and if they all could have
been this pleasant, I might still do it.
In a slow pitch game years ago back in Dayton, Oh. I found myself having to
work solo. Every night your field had three games. 5pm, 7pm and 9pm.
This one team arrived and found out they had the 9pm instead of the
7pm. Oft during the game I was doing, I could see the other team in
the parking area downing the adult ale. Thinking, "man this next game
is going to be a tough one".
Current game ends next two take the field. The team that came early was
the home team for this game [pre-scheduled]. They take the field, the first
batter hits a shot to F5....F5 hollars get two...throws the ball towards 2B..
naturally no one there. And so it went all nite. Late in game,
hometeam down, bases loaded...",monster mash" comes to the
plate and I think on the second pitch smacks one that clears the fence
by plently...however, his entire foot is on home plate. I make the call ready
for the blast and scream that was in my mind coming. The only comment made
and this by the batter was, "I thought that ground felt too solid". So on a game I
figured to be a rowdy, harsh game...was in fact a very comical one and really
enjoyable affair. Oh, the home team......the Dayon Police Department......
and this is the kicker....was undefeated....this was their only loss for the
entire season. They went one to play in the State tournament held in
Zanesville, Oh.
Just a story and sorta my salute to those of you that continue to work
slow-pitch.
