I didn't see it, but the result sounds correct. If an illegal or unreported sub makes a defensive play, and it is appealed by the offense before the next pitch, the sub is ejected, and the batter returns and resumes the count prior to that pitch.

It had to be the fielder who caught the fly, in this case.
