Probably because he got the same benefit we got - learning about it playing in the yard, following teams, players, getting involved. I coached a 15-17 year old team last year - I had one kid who hadn't played since he was five years old! No skills whatsoever, couldn't throw a ball from 2nd to first. By the end of the year, he had hit .200, and knocked a double over the LF head. Every guy on our team took him in. As bad as he was, it took a lot of guts for him to try it.
