Hind sight being 20-20, you did what was required! however a couple of things about positioning.

You should never turn your back on players. In the transition you describe, you should be at least looking over your shoulder. In transition it is tough but if you go back to basic court coverage, the trail has the on ball call in the area of the court you decribe. You as the lead should have it but dont turn your back running at full speed, because you need to help and know where the ball is...
