Considering where the Twins were at mid-season, it's just amazing that they're in the playoffs, let alone atop the division. I think I heard that they're the first team ever to reach first place for the first time on the last day of the season. The catcher, Mauer, is the first catcher to win the AL batting title and the first catcher ever to lead the whole Major Leagues in batting. Just a remarkable story.
Has anyone seen the ESPN promo for their playoff coverage? It features Tommy Lasorda in a tux trying to comfort a disconsolate Red Sox fan. He says, "It's time to cheer on those teams that HAVE made the playoffs." He turns to the women behind him and says, "Right?" One of them shrugs and says, "I'm from NY," with a typical smug NY look on her face. So Tommy turns back to the Sox fan and says, "Come on, it's time to root against the Yankees".
I thought it was done pretty well.
