Steroid Testing in NJ

NJSIAA lays out plans for substance testing

The rules are set and the way is paved for steroids testing of New Jersey high school athletes to begin this fall.

The executive committee of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association selected an organization yesterday to run the first of its kind testing program and for the first time outlined the ways it will be implemented.

Ultimately more than 10,000 New Jersey athletes competing in state tournaments could be eligible for testing -- though only a sliver of those will actually be tested.

The NJSIAA policy bans 80 substances, including a variety of steroids and items designed to mask steroids in the bloodstream. It also includes human growth hormone, testosterone, amphetamines and stimulants such as ephedra.

The penalty for a positive test is the individual athlete's loss of eligibility for one year and forfeiture of all awards. Teams will not forfeit games.
