Referee dies after collapsing during Hilliard Darby game
Sunday, September 03, 2006

A referee who collapsed because of an apparent heart attack during a Hilliard Darby High School football game Friday died later that night.

James Korogianos, 52, was part of a Toledo-based officiating crew working the game at Hilliard Darby, which was playing Toledo Central Catholic, said Chip Ebert, the Hilliard Darby athletic director. Korogianos was the umpire.

Halfway through the first quarter, just after a play started, Korogianos fell onto his face, Ebert said. Korogianos made no move to catch himself.

Norwich Township medics, who were stationed at the game, attended to Korogianos within seconds, Ebert said. They used a defibrillator on him and carried him out in a stretcher.

Ebert said he was told Korogianos had a pulse when he left the field.

The medics continued resuscitating him on the way to Doctors West Hospital, Norwich Township Fire Capt. John King said. Ebert said he learned Korogianos had died before the game was over.
