The wrap around padding is meant to prevent the bars from bending when the are hit by a foul ball or pitch, not to stop them from "slamming into head." (which doesn't really ever happen anyway.) When you take a shot in the mask it should never (if worn properly) "slam into head" it should (as others have already said) twist off to one side, or pop completely off your head.
Your mask should be loose enough that if you wear it without a hat it slips down to your eyes.
