If a ref can't explain a situation and feels like he/she would have to lie to the coach or streeeetch the truth in order to respond to that coach - said referee is better off saying nothing at all. Coaches will remember what was said and if it turns out to be inaccurate or not true, that official will hear about it later (at least on the NCAA level).

Remember the golden rule, "You cannot misquote silence."

Without our word, we are nothing.
