I also umpire in CA, in an area where there's always a heat wave. After a double header (two 9-inning games) I'm pretty much used up but I would never consider working a game without my chest protector.
I have a partner working the adult leagues with me who never wears anything but a mask....been doing this since 1979. He hides behind the catcher. I don't see how he sees the ball but he's very good.
