Wet Outfield

Good morning
Last might I had a Jr Legion game 17 year olds. When I got to the field the coaches were in the outfield using a vacuum to get water off the field. As game time approached it was apparent that the water was not going away. The problem was in right field at about 275 ft out. Both coaches were adament about getting the game in as the infield was fine and with all the rainouts and everything. What was suggested was to make a horseshoe type shape dead ball area marked with chalk paint going from the front of the wet area to the fence on both sides, which is what we did. The other umpire and myself expressed our concerns for player safty but in the end agreed. I was at the plate. My question is did I do the right thing. The game went along with out incident.
Thanks Mike
